The Decision

We have been praying and pondering for the past few months about the many questions concerning  Presley's heart surgery. The "what", "why", and "how" were answered pretty clearly through the doctor's close examination, tests, and cath. However, the "who", "where" and "when" have been a bit more difficult to answer.

Initially, we pursued the path of returning to CA which would have been somewhat comforting due to the familiar. However, after a long period of waiting, we experienced a lack of response which left our hearts and minds troubled rather than at peace. God uses all things, and we believe that He closed the door on that option.

I then remembered a contact that we had with Boston Children's Hospital. While waiting to adopt Presley, we contacted a wonderful organization called Little Hearts Medical. This is a ministry to vulnerable children in China with CHD to help get them the medical care that they desperately need. One service LHM provides is a file review for families considering the adoption of a child with CHD. Cardiologists from all over the country, who partner with LHM out of the kindness of their hearts, will review the file and then write up an assessment. We had already submitted our Letter of Intent for Presley, but we longed to understand her special and unique heart as best as we could in order to prepare for her to join our family. All that to say, our file review was done by a cardiologist from Boston, Dr. Gerald Marx. Boston also just happens to be the #1 hospital for pediatric cardiac surgery and care. Dr. Marx's assessment turned out to be extremely close to Presley's actual diagnosis. He had been so kind and had graciously offered his help should we ever need it.

I decided to email him, and he responded within a couple of hours! This was so refreshing after experiencing the opposite. We had our cardiologist's office send all of Presley's information to Boston, and then we waited for their considerations. Meanwhile, our local cardiologist also recommended a surgeon that she knows well who recently moved to Atlanta, GA. She sent Presley's information there as well. Since we have to travel either way, many of the logistics will be the same. We prayed fervently for peace and clear direction. Every doctor involved has agreed that Presley is a good candidate for a bi-ventricular repair. This has brought us much confirmation, peace, and hope.

So, today on the last day of  "Heart Month" we have a decision . . . we are going to Boston! Dr. Marx and his team have been so helpful, caring, and personal. Dr. Emani will be the surgeon to perform Presley's repair. We feel really good about our decision, and we believe that God has led us to this place. We trust that He is in control of every detail. Now the final question is the "when". We are currently waiting for the scheduling of everything which will most likely take place in the next few months.

From a human perspective we believe that Presley will be in the best hands possible. However, our hope ultimately lies in the hands of the Great Physician. He is in charge, and He has designed the plan. We have peace that He is guiding, and we will follow Him anywhere He so chooses. There are so many details to work out, not only for the travel and logistics of surgery and recovery, but also for our dear ones who will stay behind. We are asking the Lord for His help each day to "be still and know that he is God!" We pray that we will continue to remember and be comforted by the fact that our precious Presley's life is His creation. We pray that we will not worry and that we will remember and never doubt His love, care, and faithfulness.

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" Matthew 6:26

Presley is doing so well, and she is a feisty ball of energy, spunk, and spirit! We believe that this spirit God has given her will help our little warrior fight through the battle ahead. The only thing that gives a clue into the defects in her heart is her little blue fingers, toes, and lips. We can't wait to see our little blueberry turn a beautiful shade of pink! Presley understands that she needs to get her heart fixed, and she prays every night for Jesus to help her be all better. She talks constantly about our promise that after her surgery she gets to go to class and dance ballet! She asks me daily if everyone will come and watch! We can't wait to watch you dance, sweet girl! We are so thankful to have a front row seat into the most wonderful performance of all, which is the story of your life! To God be the glory!

8 is Great!

Our little Joy Joy turned 8 today! How can that be?

Our first China baby . . . growing up so fast!

This special girl is full of ideas . . . so we did our best to honor her wishes on her special day! The morning began with homemade waffles with strawberries and whipped cream . . . so yummy!

Her biggest wish, which she has been talking about for weeks, was for a fish! We decided on a betta fish, so off to the pet store we went. Who knew there were so many kinds of bettas?
"Hmm . . . this one looks pretty good! A dragon scale betta, light pink and white with a beautiful flowing tail."
"Yes, this is the one! And I'm going to name him 'Bubbles'!"
So, we gathered the necessary supplies, and we went home to introduce Bubbles to his new home!

Joy received a few more gifts and cards from her siblings!
Her favorite was a harmonica! Just look at that smile!

Joy requested a lemon cake with strawberry frosting and white flowers with yellow centers. (Not that it was specific or anything!) She was very happy with the finished product!
Friday night is always pizza night at the Metzgar house, and tonight was no exception. Joy wanted to do personal homemade pizzas with her favorite toppings: pepperoni and sausage. With a little help from Trader Joe's, pizza night was a success!

We finished off the evening with Joy's special cake and the ceremonial blowing out of the candles.

What a joyous day it was, celebrating the gift of  Joy's life! God gave us such an amazing treasure in this girl, and it was truly our delight to grant her special wishes on this special day!

Joy is smart, sensitive, deep, insightful, curious, funny, energetic, creative, grateful, humble, and caring. She brightens our day and fills our lives with sunshine! Joy Joy, we love you always and forever!
Happy birthday, 8 year old! May 8 truly be great!!! xoxo

Hearts

February is national heart month, and this week is national congenital heart defect awareness week.

We are aware like never before the impact that CHD makes on children and their families. The uncertainties, the waiting for answers, the struggle to just live each day to its fullest without the constant nagging feelings of what ifs. And yet also the love, the joy, the spirit, the resilience, and the hope!

This precious girl has already brought so much "heart" into our lives! Her heart is special and unique, and I don't just mean her physical heart. She is a treasure beyond measure, one of a kind, created by our good, good Father!

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14

As the details of heart surgery unfold, we are painfully aware that we are about to walk into something really hard and uncomfortable. Yet, we are also more keenly aware that our loving Father is in control. We know and trust that He will be with us each and every step of the way! We pray that God would use it to grow a deeper compassion in our hearts for others. And no matter what, we want to be able to say
"blessed be the name of the Lord!"

"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:37-39

Swingin!

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee,
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not,
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Morning Reading Buddy!

"Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life."
Psalm 143:8

She Used To . . .

She used to . . . live in an orphanage in China.
Now . . . she lives in our home in America with her family!

She used to . . . rock her body back and forth in her sleep to soothe herself.
Now . . . mommy holds her and rocks her and soothes her to sleep!

She used to . . . cry and shout and use her hands to hit and flail when she was upset.
Now . . . she uses her words to express herself, and she uses her hands to love and hug!

She used to . . . be unable to wait for food while it was being prepared in the kitchen.
Now . . . she asks for what she wants and waits patiently (most of the time) while it is prepared!

She used to . . . bounce from activity to activity like a little pinball with a very short attention span.
Now . . . she focuses on one task at a time and stays with it for extended periods of time!

She used to . . . fight for the control in every situation.
Now . . . she is learning to trust mommy and daddy to be in control!

She used to . . . have no idea how to make her own choices.
Now . . . she loves the freedom to choose from her guided options, and she is learning to stick to her choice!

She used to . . . need mommy to "hold you" most of the day.
Now . . . she still needs mommy to hold her, but not quite as often!

She used to . . . play a lot of charades to communicate.
Now . . . she is practically fluent in English!

She used to . . . chatter away incessantly in Chinese.
Now . . . she chatters away incessantly in English!

She used to . . . not know name of Jesus.
Now . . . she listens to stories about Him, sings songs about Him, and prays to Him!

She used to . . . be an orphan.
Now . . . she is our precious, beloved daughter, cherished and adored!

It is amazing what 4 months of forever family love can do!!!

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

2 Corinthians 5:17
